Sixth Class took part in a problem solving activity on Wednesday with Ms. Gaughan, one of the green Schools coordinators. Hippo bags have been installed in almost all of the classroom toilets at this stage. These are water saving devices that are placed in the cistern of the toilet to reduce the amount of water being wasted/flushed, We carried out an audit in 3rd and 4th Class to find out how many times (on average) the toilet was being flushed on a daily basis.
Results from 3rd Class: Girls flushed the toilet 36 times; Boys flushed the toilet 17 times, So in total 3rd Class flushed the toilet 53 times in one day. Results from 4th Class: Girls flushed the toilet 52 times; Boys flushed the toilet 45 times, So in total 4th Class flushed the toilet 97 times in one day, The children used their problem solving skills and discovered that we will be saving, 296 litres of water for 3rd Class (on average) on a daily basis (and 530L per week). 4th Class save (on average) 190 litres per day (and 950L per week). Overall, with Hippo bags, 3rd and 4th Class are saving on average, 296L per day, and 1480L per week. Per school year, they save 53,415L per school year. WOW! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Being on the Green Schools Committee is a huge honour and a big responsibility. We are working very hard to get our third green flag. We believe that if we continue to work hard we'll get our water flag later this year.
Even though we won't be here next year, we believe that the committee will work just as hard, or harder when we leave. Kate Regan and Aoibhe Cowen Our Green Schools committee was formed in December 2017 and we decided to keep the same committee members again for the 2nd year (Sep 2018- June 2019) as a lot of pupils felt they were missing out by only being involved in Year 1.
When our 6th class left in June 2018, we replaced them by inviting new members from 2nd class. The committee members were selected by the class teacher. There are 4/5 pupils from each class from 2nd- 6th. Although the committee is made up of primarily senior pupils, it was agreed that they must represent the whole school body and aim to be as inclusive as possible. Committee for our Water Theme 2nd Eanna Cullen,Erin Buggy,Kevin Bracken,Sam Heffernan, Laura Jackson 3rd Mark Flynn, Jenny Clavin, Conor Murtagh, Kathleen Lynam 4th Grace Cleary, Grace Condron, John Cusack, Alannah Lydon 5th Saoirse Murtagh, Ruby Cole, Graeme O’Connor, Philip Smith, Darragh Galvin Dunne 6th Charlie Burke, Cian Kinnarney, Sean Devine, Kate Regan, Aoibhe Cowen Ms. Gaughan and Ms. Corcoran are the Green School Co-ordinators Mary, our cleaner is also on the green Schools committee. Although she does not attend any of our meetings, her role is vital, as she communicates with us and keeps us informed with litter, recycling, leaks and the general upkeep of the school. Our committee usually meets once a week, We usually meet in Ms. Gaughan’s room straight after big break. Our meetings usually take 20-25 minutes. Saoirse is in charge of taking the notes/minutes. The committee must report back to their classes and report any news/events. It’s important to constantly remind everyone that while we are working towards a new theme, we still have to maintain our litter, recycling and energy efforts going. Hippo Bags have been installed in almost all of our classroom toilets. The Green Schools committee helped Ms. Gaughan to install them.
On average we waste 7 to 9 litres per flush (depending on the size of the toilet) The hippo bags reduce that amount to approx. 5 or 7 litres per flush. We are all doing our best to save water in Scoil Naomh Colmcille! This is our ICT committee for 2019. Our job is to assist with updating the school blog and digital noticeboards. We will help teachers and students in other classes when necessary. There are two 5th class students, two 6th class students and two 4th class students. They are Grace. B, Oisín. S, Eric. M, Larry. B, Stephen. O'G, Darragh McG.
