The Dream I Hold Inside

5/12/2019

The pupils of our school are very proud to launch this song, "The Dream I Hold Inside" composed by 5th and 6th class pupils, along with their principal Mr. Frank Kelly. The song is performed and recorded by our school choir and Trad group. The song was conducted by Ms. Aisling Minnock, musical accompaniment by Mr. James Hogan on piano and Ms. Sharon Carroll on concertina. As a school community we are proud of our strong music tradition within our school.

First Class were busy exploring what objects and materials magnets are attracted to. Check out our junior scientists at work!
Our junior scientists were given the task of exploring how to make a paperclip 'walk' around a plate. It took a few attempts before one group successfully solved the challenge.

First Class Science Investigation

20/10/2019

After our 'Tree Day' Observation Walk last week we decided to investigate how plants 'drink' water. We decided to put celery sticks into jars of water. We put red food colouring into one jar and green food colouring into another jar. We placed a mark to show the level of the water and we left the jars at our investigation station for 24 hours.
Picture
Before - jars of water and celery.
Picture
After - Check it out!!
We noticed that the water is a little lower than our green mark. We can see red food colouring up along the stalk of the celery and the leaves have changed colour! We could not see anything on the celery in the green food colouring because celery is also green!
We now know that the plant 'drinks' water and sends it up through the plant to the leaves or flowers at the top.

Last month our theme in SESE and other subject areas was 'All About Me'. First Class pupils chatted their parents at home about themselves when they were younger; their likes and dislikes, important events in their lives and artefacts from their past. Here are some of the artefacts, or things from their earlier years, that some of the children brought in to show the class.

Emelia brought in her teddy and her baby bowl and mug!

Our Daily Mile
The sun came out this morning
As we completed our daily mile
14 laps we did together
It only took us a while

The morning dew was still about
Filling the air with its lovely scent
The summer air was blowing
As we started our event

We could hear the birds chirping
And the chatting of the people
While glistening in the distance
Was Durrow church’s steeple

We could feel the soil beneath our feet
While we walked around the track
As we were nearly finished
We had to pick up the slack

Before we went inside
tiredness hit the class
but when we went to do our work
Our senses were in full blast
