First Class Step back in Time!

Last month our theme in SESE and other subject areas was 'All About Me'. First Class pupils chatted their parents at home about themselves when they were younger; their likes and dislikes, important events in their lives and artefacts from their past. Here are some of the artefacts, or things from their earlier years, that some of the children brought in to show the class.

Stepping Back in Time - First Class Investigate!

We investigated a number of items that people used long ago in their homes. Have a look at the items we examined and read what we had to say about them!
Item 1: Washboard and Tub. Each group correctly guessed that this was used by people long ago for washing and scrubbing clothes.
Picture
This is a Hot Water Bottle! One group guessed this correctly! Other groups thought that it might be for holding drinking water or hot water or for storing ink for ink pens.
We discovered that this item is a Last which was used for making soles for shoes. We thought that it might be a shoe holder, an item used for cutting wheat, for helping shoes keep their shape or size or that it was an anchor!
Picture
This item gave us the best laugh! Ciarán told us that it was a Chamber Pot. Some of us weren't sure if we should write down what we thought it was used for on our investigation sheets!
Picture
We had no trouble naming this item! Callum told us about how it was heated over the fire and then used to iron the clothes.
Our last item was a Butter Churn. Two groups guessed this correctly. Some groups suggested that it might be for drying clothes, for washing clothes, for making dough or used as a food mixer.

We really enjoyed our history lesson examining things that our grandparents or great grandparents might have used in their homes.

Check us out having our Pancake Party last Tuesday! We all helped prepare the pancake batter and wrote our list of ingredients and method for our very own Pancake Recipe sheets. A big thank you to Miss McManus and Tyra who fried up our pancakes in the kitchen later!
Picture
We also celebrated World Book Day on Thursday. Apart from having our DEAR reading time we also gathered in our Story Circle to listen to Miss Carroll reading some books for us. We watched some online stories on the World Book Day website and we had a fun books, stories and rhymes Table Quiz in the afternoon! Now we've got to go use our World Book Day book tokens!

First Class children are participating in the Read Anything Anytime Anywhere initiative hosted by Offaly County Libraries. We have DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time every day during the eight-week period. This week we are taking turns to read poems our classmates have written and displayed in our 'Poetry Corner' during our DEAR time.
