Sixth Class took part in a problem solving activity on Wednesday with Ms. Gaughan, one of the green Schools coordinators. Hippo bags have been installed in almost all of the classroom toilets at this stage. These are water saving devices that are placed in the cistern of the toilet to reduce the amount of water being wasted/flushed, We carried out an audit in 3rd and 4th Class to find out how many times (on average) the toilet was being flushed on a daily basis.
Results from 3rd Class: Girls flushed the toilet 36 times; Boys flushed the toilet 17 times, So in total 3rd Class flushed the toilet 53 times in one day. Results from 4th Class: Girls flushed the toilet 52 times; Boys flushed the toilet 45 times, So in total 4th Class flushed the toilet 97 times in one day, The children used their problem solving skills and discovered that we will be saving, 296 litres of water for 3rd Class (on average) on a daily basis (and 530L per week). 4th Class save (on average) 190 litres per day (and 950L per week). Overall, with Hippo bags, 3rd and 4th Class are saving on average, 296L per day, and 1480L per week. Per school year, they save 53,415L per school year. WOW! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
